Dev Log #2 - And now for something completely different
Your eyes do not deceive you - this month’s devlog has nothing to do with Project Croaker. Instead, the creature is called a Bloom Serpent (working title) and it is indeed part of a different concept I’ve been playing around with.
I have some ideas that I’m prototyping, but while coding is not an issue and the mechanics will either be fun or they won’t (pending the prototype), one of the big unknowns for this project is the art side of things (character art, environment art and all of their animations). Unlike Project Croaker, this project would be much, much heavier from an art and animation standpoint. That’s’ why I wanted to start seeing what sort of quality level I can hit with my own limited art skills even before any mechanics are actually prototyped.
The creature took about 9 hours of work spread over a week, but there’s plenty of steps in the process that can be improved with the benefit of hindsight. With luck I’d hope to get it down to around 6 hours, though I have no idea about how many creatures I’ll need.
I think the creature turned out pretty well, but I’m working on an environment next in order to see where everything lands. Once the environment is done, imported into Unity and animated, I’ll post this to Reddit and see what sort of feedback it gets.
